Frequently Asked Questions
- How much do your classes cost?
Most of our classes cost £6/person and last at least an hour
(some are 75 minutes). You pay on
the night, week by week. We are confident that you will enjoy
our classes, and will want to come back again and again.
- Do I need a partner, or can I come on my own?
Having a dance partner, particularly for practising, is very
useful, but we will do our best to accommodate you if you come
solo. We can’t know in advance what mix of the sexes we will
have on the night, but lots of ladies are happy to dance
together, with one as
leader and one as follower. It will help us if you let us know
in advance if you are coming solo, so we have some idea of the
balance of numbers to expect.
- Do you expect students to rotate partners during
classes?
In the majority of cases, no. Most of our students enrol as
couples, and want to dance together. It can be helpful in the
learning process to change partners occasionally, but many
people feel uncomfortable with the idea, and the last thing we
want to do is to put anyone off! However, if you are a solo
dancer (and particularly if the class has a gender imbalance),
we will expect you to be ready to dance with anyone who is
available. We operate a different policy with our Argentine
Tango classes, because in that style most dancers regularly change partners
when dancing socially; but even there, rotation isn't
compulsory.
- Do you have any age limits or fitness requirements?
If you are 16 or over, you will be very welcome, regardless of
your age. Dancing is effective gentle exercise, and can be very
beneficial to the active retired, both physically and mentally.
All we ask is that you are fit enough to be able to move freely,
and are not suffering from any condition that could put you at
risk through dancing. Ladies: please don’t attend our classes if
you know you are expecting a baby.
- What if I miss a week?
We regularly revise new work, but obviously, you will get the
most out of the class by attending regularly. With our complete
beginners classes, we do cover quite a lot of basic ground in
the first few weeks, and you would struggle to join part way
through the course, so if you can’t make the first few sessions,
it would probably be better to join the next new class. You
won’t have long to wait.
- What should I wear?
If you have them, you'll want to wear your dance shoes:
specially made to support the foot properly, and with suede
leather soles to give just the right amount of grip on the
floor. Otherwise, wear comfortable shoes with smooth soles that
offer flexibility and support. Trainers, or any shoes with
rubber soles, are not really suitable: they offer too much grip,
and will make it difficult to turn properly. Ladies should avoid
backless sandals – you'll spend the whole class trying to keep
them on your feet! We have no dress code: smart casual is fine,
and loose fitting is usually more comfortable.
- Where can I dance?
We hope that you will attend our regular
social dances, but there are lots of
other opportunities for social dancing. Take a look at our sister site:
www.midlandsdance.info, where you will find hundreds of
forthcoming social dances throughout the Counties of Warwickshire, West
Midlands & Worcestershire.
