Ballroom & Latin American

Beginner's Classes (Level 1)

Our classes for beginners are designed to suit the needs of those who have never danced before, and also those returning to dancing after a period doing other things.

We'll introduce you to several Ballroom and Latin American dances, learning some basic figures in each, and putting them together into short routines that you can use with confidence when you start to attend social dance events. We've carefully chosen the class content so that you can start to use your new dance skills straight away, but also, to lay good foundations for progression to an improver's class or private tuition.

Our aim is to make our classes fun and friendly and to make your learning enjoyable. We'll give you plenty of time to find your dancing feet, and to get plenty of practice, so that you feel confident in your progress.

  • Content: Ballroom & Latin American dancing for complete beginners (Level 1). No prior knowledge required.
    • First steps in Waltz, Quickstep, Tango, Cha Cha Cha, Rumba & Jive.
  • Enrolment: No formal enrolment. Just bring your partner to the first class and then pay week by week.
  • Cost: £6/person each week.

Improver's Classes (Levels 2 & 3)

Many beginners just want to try something new, or to learn enough to be able to get around the floor at social dance events. For those that want to go further, we offer classes for improvers. Most of our improvers have already completed one of our beginner's classes, but anyone else who already has a little dance experience is welcome to join the classes, but please do contact us for an informal chat about your level of experience, and to make sure that you join a class that will suit you.

We carry over all the dance styles from the beginner's classes, and add Samba (Level 2) and Foxtrot (Level 3) for the first time. We teach a wider range of dance figures, and put them together into slightly longer routines, suitable for social dancing. We also start to be more aware of issues of technique, style and floorcraft and we'll give you every encouragement to start dancing socially.

Our Improver's Classes run over two terms.

Intermediate Classes (Level 4)

Dancers who have completed our improver's classes, or other dancers with a similar level of dance experience may wish to progress to our ongoing intermediate level class. Anyone is welcome to join the class, but please do contact us for an informal chat about your level of experience, and to make sure that you join a class that will suit you.

We carry over all the dance styles from the improver's classes, and continue to extend the range of dance figures taught, incorporating them in amalgamations suitable for social dancing. We also increase the focus on technique, style and floorcraft and give you every encouragement to dance socially.

  • Content: Ballroom & Latin American dancing for intermediates (Level 4). Sound basic knowledge is required.
    • Regular revision and practise in all the dance styles from Levels 2/3.
    • Additional figures and amalgamations in each style, taken in rotation.

Argentine Tango

For 2012, we will be offering two separate routes to learning to dance Argentine Tango, each aimed at quite different groups of dancers:

We offer a class for the general social dancer who would like to be able to dance a little Argentine Tango as part of an evening of mixed dancing.

We will be teaching a group of standardised figures that are easy to learn and which give a real flavour of the authentic dance.

We also offer separate classes for those who wish to learn a fully authentic style of Argentine Tango, Tango de Salon.

We teach the fundamental principles of the dance: posture, embrace & connection, lead & follow together with walking, turning, musicality and improvisation. Partner rotation is encouraged but is not compulsory.
