Beginner's Classes (Ballroom & Latin) (Level 1)

Our classes for beginners are designed to suit the needs of those who have never danced before, but will also suit those returning to dancing after a period doing other things.

We will introduce you to a variety of Ballroom and Latin American dance styles: Waltz, Quickstep, Social Foxtrot, Tango, Rumba, Jive & Cha Cha Cha, learning a selection of basic figures in each style, and putting them together into short routines that you can use with confidence when you start to attend social dance events. We have carefully chosen the class content so that our learners can start to use their new dance skills straight away, but also, to lay a good foundation for progression to an improvers class or private tuition.

Our aim is to make our classes fun and friendly and to make your learning enjoyable. We will give you plenty of time to find your dancing feet, and get plenty of practice, so that you feel confident in your progress.

We start new beginner's classes in January and September each year, and our next new classes will begin on Wednesday, 8 September (Birmingham, Northfield), Thursday, 9 September (Redditch, Batchley) or Sunday, 12 September (Bromsgrove, Catshill).

Improver's Classes (Ballroom & Latin) (Levels 2 & 3)

Many beginners just want to try something new, or to learn enough to be able to get around the floor at social dance events, and are not looking to progress beyond a basic level. For those that do want to progress, we offer classes for improvers. Most of our improvers have already completed one of our beginners classes, but anyone else who already has a little dance experience is welcome to join the classes, but please do contact us for an informal chat about your level of experience, and to make sure that you join a class that will suit you.

We carry over all the dance styles from the beginners classes, and add Slow Foxtrot and Samba for the first time. We aim to teach a wider range of dance figures, and put them together into slightly longer routines suitable for social dancing. We also start to be more aware of issues of technique, style and floorcraft and we will give you every encouragement to start dancing socially.

We start new improver's classes several times each year, and our next new classes will begin on Thursday, 9 September (Redditch, Batchley) or Sunday, 12 September (Bromsgrove, Catshill).

Intermediate Classes (Ballroom & Latin) (Level 4)

Dancers who have completed our improver's classes, or other dancers with a similar level of dance experience may wish to progress to an intermediate level class. We carry over all the dance styles from the improver's classes, and continue to extend the range of dance figures taught, and incorporate them in amalgamations suitable for social dancing. We also increase the focus on technique, style and floorcraft and give you every encouragement to dance socially.

Popular Sequence Dances (Level 2+)

Dancers who attend typical mixed social dances in the Midlands area will find that up to 50% (and sometimes more) of the dance programme is represented by sequence dances. Specialist sequence dance clubs exist, which aim to learn most of the new sequence dances that emerge from the annual round of inventive dance competitions, while the wider social dancing community will usually know and be happy to dance a much more limited range of well-established favourites, with the occasional newer dance, for variety.

Our beginner and improver classes usually include a handful of sequence dances, including the Square Tango, Mayfair Quickstep, and Rumba One, but we also have an ongoing Sequence Dance class (on the 2nd Saturday of the month), in which we teach a repertoire of popular sequence dances that feature regularly in social dance programmes. Each monthly class is self-contained: we teach one dance at a time, and anyone is welcome to attend, whether regularly, or occasionally, if a particular dance is of interest.

  • When: 7:30pm on the 2nd Saturday of the month (60 minutes).
  • Where: Catshill Dance Centre, Gibb Lane, Catshill, Bromsgrove, B61 0JP (Park in school car park, next door).
  • Content: Popular sequence dances. Basic prior knowledge is assumed.
    • Saturday, 11th September 2010 - Alpine Stroll
    • Saturday, 9th October 2010 - Rumba d'Amour
    • Saturday, 13th November 2010 - Madison Swing
  • Enrolment: No need to enrol. Just bring your partner to the class and pay as you go.
  • Cost: £5/person each class.

Each class is followed by social dancing, from 8:30pm to 10:30pm, and the dance taught in the class will feature twice in the dance programme, along with a balanced selection of Ballroom & Latin music, a small selection of Sequence Dances and a little Argentine Tango. Class members are very welcome to stay for the Social Dance (£7.50/person for both class & social).

An Introduction to Argentine Tango (Level 1)

Argentine Tango is very different from every other dance style, and has a unique feel and language of its own. With origins in late nineteenth century Argentina, the dance took the world by storm in the early twentieth century. Tango's 'Golden Age' happily coincided with the development of modern recording techniques, leaving a wonderful legacy by the once great dance orchestras of Buenos Aires that are still widely danced to today. While the Golden Age came to an abrupt end with the political and economic upheavals of the 1950s, Tango has been rediscovered by a later generation, and is growing in popularity all the time.

We will introduce you to this wonderful dance, and teach the fundamental principles of Tango movement, and some common figures and embellishments.

  • When: Starts on Tuesday, 14 September 2010 at 8:30pm.
  • Where: Catshill Dance Centre, Gibb Lane, Catshill, Bromsgrove, B61 0JP (Park in school car park, next door).
  • Content: Argentine Tango for complete beginners (Level 1). No prior knowledge required.
  • Enrolment: No need to enrol. Just bring your partner to the first class and then pay week by week.
  • Cost: £6/person each week.
